The Root of the Fruit
So appreciated & enjoyed this wonderful sermon by 1 of our associate pastors, PJ Berner in our series on the fruit of the Spirit...https://subspla.sh/ybtpm5s
Jesus tells us “I am the vine, the true source of life for my followers”
…not His Word, His people, doctrine & theology(knowledge), morality, family, etc. They all have to flow from our relationship with Christ. I need to make sure I’ve got that right
1 Cor 2:2 “I resolved to know nothing but Christ & Him crucified”
Draw spiritual vitality from a relationship with Jesus
doesnt come from study, prayer, it’s cultivated with time spent with them bc we enjoy & love them! Not definable by a checklist, book, only as far as they deepen my relationship with Him!
Our trust for our vitality/life with Him isn’t in
a. our obedience. That would be like losing weight through starving self- works for a while but not sustainable or
b. our emotions/“spiritual high” that’d be like tryin to Living off candy, Its fun & sweet for a time but then we crash
c. our theology- like getting seminary degree & then working flipping burgers. We wouldn’t be applying the knowledge we obtained to live
Christ is a living Savior, alive and actively involved in sustaining and growing our very life! To manifest godliness in my life, I can’t produce/bear more fruit w/o leaning deeply into my relationship with the Source! How? Relate it to human relationships like in marriage I don’t deepen our relationship by just doing what my spouse wants but I spend time with, connecting, resolving conflict (aka repent & ask for forgiveness)
Let a genuine love for Jesus transform my life.Fruit naturally grows, blooms when it’s connected to the vine, bc that’s what it does. The Vine causes the growth. Like when our root is the flesh, sin & selfishness comes naturally bc it’s not about us but Christ in us, transforming us from the inside out! God’s design for our lives is to lean into our relationship with Christ and become more like Him. Love Jesus more than sin, love the things that He loves by spending with Him! Marinate, dwell in it. Analogy of the broken pecan branch-problem with the root not the fruit, death/no fruit inevitable, can’t superglue it on, focusing on peripherals/externals/effort. Solution- love Jesus more by spending time with His Word and prayer so it flows through me, thoughts, desires, words, actions transformed by it & will be like His, let the Root bear the fruit, like marriage relationship-don’t just do what they want. Abide and have joy to the full!
Let my pursuit of joy lead to Joy in Jesus
