And I crossed the chemo finish line with bells & balloons...literally!! Such a sweet day with sweet support and love to celebrate the completion of phase 1 of this cancer battle! And I’d say I came out victorious!!...with the Lord strengthening me physically mentally emotionally & spiritually all the way through! My great God has poured out His goodness and grace on me in so many ways from the very beginning! And used SO many of you as His hands & feet to do His wonderful works! I’m beyond blessed, humbled and grateful!
It has been such a fun finish getting to have 2 faithful, fabulous friends come in the home stretch, the last legs with me, accompanying me for my final 2 weeks of this 5 month marathon! This week amazing Amy, my terrific trauma nurse friend, came with her creativity and humor in full force! She showed up at my door with a bunch of balloons & all a bunch of homemade treasures: a tshirt for me to wear in that said “Ask me how I got through chemo” on the front & “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.” 2 Timothy 4:17 on the back, a big poster filled with pictures of family & friends who were “there with he in spirit even though they couldn’t be in person,” and a stack of signs that would be revealed through the infusion process...& off we went to the Leonard Cancer Center infusion unit for the last time!! ...wearing my new shirt and a curly rainbow clown wig for the occasion! Kaleb, my oldest son, has added a few nicknames for me: curly & fur ball now that it’s started to come back in so I thought it was fitting, fun & festive for the occasion! Everywhere we went we “shouted” the joy of the day! It was sweet (& so were the plate of goodies I brought for the staff to join in the celebration with us!)
In all the excitement I forgot my numbing cream (Amy came over early to start our day with a good walk with Rifle before we left) so they offered theit Pain Ease (“Panties” as the ER nurses affectionately call it) numbing spray. My chemo nurse (who had taken care of Amy when she was a patient at Mission being treated for thyroid cancer a few years back!) asked Amy to spray while she cleaned the area & poked to access. She sat from across the cubicle & shot the spray in a long stream with perfect aim...the characteristic humor she always brings!
The nurse drew labs as always...& they were on their every-other week schedule: LOW! So I earned myself a couple trips back to the 4th floor for booster shots. I guess I can think of it as the necessary cool down laps and stretching after a long grueling race.
Throughout the infusion we laughed and shared and she brought out her homemade signs one at a time and took pictures
-“Hair we go to the last round of chemo!”
-“Straight Outta Chemo”
-“Chemo was Tough but my God is Tougher!”
Dave was going to meet me to take me to lunch when I was done. My oncologist was supposed to come see me during my infusion so they let him come up (2 visitors!) for a few minutes. We never did get to see the doc but he got to meet all my nurse friends from the last 5 months!...then we just split. Enough waiting for him I guess. Unbeknownst to me we had people to see and celebrating to do! They did make me walk out the main exit (usually I slip out the back & down the stairs) so they could “ring” me out. I felt like the Covid patients being wheeled out of the hospital with a parade of cheers!
As I walked off the elevator and to the exit I saw a lady walking with balloons and thought “oh how sweet, someone else has a sweet friend coming to celebrate a birthday or finishing chemo!” ...then I realized it was MY friend there to celebrate with ME!...& my hubby, boys and more friends!! With cheers, hugs, balloons, flowers and a decorated car! We haven’t cleaned it off yet so I’m still getting honked at from the “HONK! I’m done with Chemo” sign on the back. And my hubbys “Done with chemo...& still sexy!” ๐
We all went over to Cheesecake Factory and had a fun celebration lunch together! To God be the Glory and thanks be to my dear family and friends for a memorable day!!๐ฅฐ
